We kindly ask you to re-submit your application to (NB: NEW EMAIL ADDRESS) by Friday May 11.

The International Society for Empirical Studies of Literature (IGEL) is organizing a Training School in Psychometrics. The University of Stavanger in Norway will host the Training School on the 22nd until the 24th of July in 2018, right before the Biennial IGEL Conference.

The aims of the Training School are to teach early career researchers coming from the Humanities the basics of psychometrics (PhD students and Postdocs will therefore be given priority to the limited number or places). This field of research is devoted to the development and validation of measuring instruments. We will be focusing mainly on self-report instruments, but will introduce alternative measuring instruments as well. The participants will learn – through lectures and hands on sessions – to design a questionnaire based on qualitative data; to analyze and reduce the data using exploratory factor analysis; and to validate their resulting scale using confirmatory factor analysis.

Integral to this training school is our mentor system. We will match every participant to a researcher that is a member of our IGEL community with similar research interests. That researcher will mentor the participant before the training school and after the training school, providing guidance to the participant to further develop their research.

If you want to participate, please send your application to Moniek Kuijpers at before Friday May 11 (please note the change of email address and date). Your application should include:

  • Your personal information (name, affiliation, research area/interest, and whether you are a PhD student, a Postdoc or other)
  • A brief motivation letter in which you explain why you would like to participate in the training school
  • A research question plus a brief description of the research project you would like to develop over the course of the training school (focused on the concept(s) you would like to measure)

You can also use the above email address if you have any questions about the training school or the application procedure.

Registration costs 150 euro, which includes a one-year membership to IGEL (including our society’s journal Scientific Study of Literature (SSOL)). Students participating in our training school get a 20 EUR discount for the 4-day IGEL conference on 25th to 28th of July at the same location. The total costs of the training school + conference is 280 EUR for Student members (MA/PhD). More information about fees and other practicalities:
